The CIvil war experience
"Introduction to the Collection"
The Civil War was very costly to the American Identity because it showed America fighting a war with itself, as both sides were on American soil. The Civil War was very bloody and led to many causalities as seen by the pictures in this collection. All of the battles were bloody but, the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Antietam were both the bloodiest battle and the bloodiest day of the Civil War. The use of the new rifles made it easier to kill, as it was more accurate and faster to reload. The tensions and disagreement between the North and South led to the violence and the bloodiness of the war as well. The disagreement of slavery between both sides was the main cause of the war and the bloody battles that ensued. The North preached for anti-slavery, having many abolitionist leading the movement, such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, John Brown, among others. The South was pro-slavery as they were necessary in the cultivation of their crops, the basis of their economy. The Africans and runaway slaves played a big part in the fighting for the North, as they helped fight against the oppressing South. Abraham Lincoln was an emerging hero in the North as he wanted the abolition of slavery, but also wanted to preserve the Union and get the country out of this war. He was one of the most important figures in the Civil War and his efforts have ranked him one of the best presidents. The military of the South was outmatched to that of the North as well. The Confederate army was heavily outnumbered and less experienced than that of the Union army. The Union army was led by Ulysses S. Grant, who would later become president due to his war efforts, along with William T. Sherman, who destroyed Atlanta, along with George McClellan, all important for the war effort. The Confederate Army was led by Robert E. Lee, who deferred the job of Union general, and "Stonewall" Jackson, who if not killed by his own troops might have changed the outcome of the war. The American experience during the war was very traumatic as the country was fighting with itself and it showed the disunity of America. It also revealed the tensions between the pro-slavery and the abolitionists and the violence that citizens would preform to defend their beliefs. The Civil War was ultimately the North and South defending what they believe in, showing the resilience and the determination of Americans adding to the American Identity.
